Dear Parents,

This week, we begin National Catholic Schools Week, our annual celebration of Catholic education. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools—Faith, Academics, Service.” What is wonderful about this theme is that the School of the Cathedral already practices these three priorities every day, from kindergarten through Grade 8.

At the School of the Cathedral, our children learn faith—not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a real relationship with God. They benefit from high academic standards, which help each student reach his or her potential. They also learn the importance of service, both as an expression of faith and as a manifestation of good citizenship. This focus on faith, academics, and service prepares our students for meaningful lives in their families, their communities, and the Catholic Church.

We are proud to offer an education that is distinctive among educational institutions in our community. We are excited to have the opportunity during Catholic Schools Week to share what our students are learning and what they have accomplished.

Also, please join me in saying “thank you” to those who help make our school a success:  our teachers, staff, administrators, School Board members, CASPA Board members, parents, and volunteers. Through their dedication and commitment, our students are learning in a culture of faith, academics, and service.

We congratulate our Student Council members—Camilla B., Grant E., Colleen F., Daniel T., and Dennis T.—for sharing what a Catholic education at the School of the Cathedral means to them at all of the Masses this past weekend. We are proud of them and the message that they shared with the parish community.

Thank you for joining us at our Open House and Catholic Schools Week Mass yesterday. Our week of celebration will conclude this Friday, with Student Appreciation Day. Our Student Council came up with a fun dress code for the day. Students (and faculty/staff) will be allowed to show spirit by wearing colors of their favorite sports team—pro, college, or high school. They can wear shirts, sweaters, jerseys, sweatshirts, pants and colors of their favorite team. The preferred shoes are tennis shoes, but Sperries, Docksiders, and Uggs are also acceptable. Flip-flops and sandals are not permitted. Skirts/dresses should be of an appropriate length, and pants should be loose in style.

I hope you enjoy the time you share with us throughout this Catholic Schools Week.

Gratefully,

Sister Josephann Wagoner, SSND
Principal

Lunch Menu for 2/6/12- 2/17/12

LUNCH MENU INFORMATION

Due to the large number of IOU's everyday, we have found it necessary to make some changes to the procedure. In order to be sure that we can provide the items our students have pre-ordered, and to simplify the process, any student who needs a lunch and an IOU will have the choice of a peanut butter & jelly sandwich & chips/pretzels, or a cheese sandwich & chips/pretzels. The price for both will be $2.00.  Please be assured that no child will go without a lunch, but the choice will be limited.  If you find your child often has IOU's, we encourage you to consider ordering lunches in advance.

All lunch menus come by e-mail each Monday. The menu is also  posted on the school website main page as well as here on the bulletin page. You will need to print the menu and send it into the Cafeteria at school by the deadline. If you have any questions, you may reach the Cafeteria by calling 410-464-4084.

Spirit Gloves and Spirit Hats!

Just in time for Catholic Schools Week! Look for the new spirit gloves and spirit hats being sold by Catherine Kinkopf (4A) to benefit Haiti. One hundred percent of what you pay will go to support our partner parish in the Diocese of Gonaives in Haiti! Gloves are $8 a pair and hats are $7. Order now! Due to the production time required, only 40 pairs of gloves will be available. There will be an unlimited supply of the hats. Place your request in an envelope to the attention of the School Office/ Catherine Kinkopf with all checks being made payable to The School of the Cathedral. So show your school spirit and support our sisters and brothers in Haiti at the same time!

Grade 3 will hold a Bake Sale on Thursday, February 16th

Policy Regarding Transporting Students

Parents, please do not request that teachers/staff transport your children in their private vehicles as this is in direct violation of School of the Cathedral as well as Archdiocesan policy. This applies to giving children a ride to practices, games, or any other destination. Faculty and staff have been reminded of this policy, and instructed to abide by it.

Dear Children and Parents:

On behalf of the Service Ministry/Haiti Partnership Committee, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the SCMOQ families who sent in a total of $1032.00 for Friday's tag day. We are thrilled with your generous contribution!! The money raised helps to sponsor the upcoming meal packaging event to be held Sunday, February 12, 2012, from 10:30-12:30 in the school cafeteria. The 10,000 meals that we will pack that day will go to a small country in Africa, Burkina Faso. Anyone who is interested in helping out with this event, please contact Donna McCann (donna.mccann@verizon.net)

Sincerely,

Donna McCann and Brigit Macksey

Use of the Playground After School

Parents, if your child is NOT in CED, and you are staying to use the playground, please SUPERVISE your child/ren. The CED Staff cannot be responsible for extra children not under their care. Also, children should NOT be entering the building to join CED for crafts, snacks, etc. CED is a paid after-school program that you must sign-up for in the beginning of the school year. Thank you for your cooperation.

After-School Policy

It is the policy of the administration of the School of the Cathedral that neither students nor parents are permitted to enter classrooms or to access lockers for any reason after 3:15 p.m. Please do not ask CED staff to enable you or your child to break this policy. Thank you for your cooperation.

Faculty Parking Lot

The middle lot with numbered spots is for Faculty Parking ONLY. We have been having a problem with parents parking in these spots in the morning and then there are no spaces for the faculty. If you are coming in to the school or walking your child in, please park in the upper lot, DO NOT PARK IN ANY OF THE NUMBERED SPACES IN THE MIDDLE LOT. Thank you for your cooperation.

BAND 2012

Did you know that learning a musical instrument improves all areas of your child's education?

If you are interested in joining the band, please contact our Band Director by phone or e-mail Seval Kanik,

SNOW and INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Please refer to the Students/ Parents Handbook & Directory.

All official announcements regarding school closings, late openings, early closings, or emergencies are made in WJZ-TV as well as other local television stations and radio stations. The School of the Cathedral follows the same procedure as the Baltimore County Public Schools for early dismissal or closing. The only exception is for late opening.

If Baltimore County opens 1 hour or 2 hours late, Cathedral will open 1 hour late at 8:55 a.m.

Students may begin to arrive at 8:30 a.m. if necessary. In the event that, after Baltimore County announces a 2-hour late opening, it then announces it is closing, all students already at school must be picked up no later than 10:00 a.m. When Baltimore County announces an early closing, Cathedral will close accordingly:

1 hour early means that Cathedral will close at 1:45 p.m.
2 hours early means that Cathedral will close at 12:45 p.m.
3 hours early means that Cathedral will close at 11:45 a.m.

Parents should arrive to pick up their children as promptly as possible. The children will remain in the school lobby or gym under adult supervision until they are picked up. If there is a concern about road conditions, a child may leave for the day after the parent reports to the School Office. At all times it is the parents' decision to send children to school in adverse weather conditions. Every effort will be made to communicate as thoroughly as possible with parents regarding early closing. When feasible, a flier indicating that school may close early due to expected adverse weather conditions will be distributed to parents at morning drop-off. A group e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided to the school also announcing any early closings. Please do not call the School Office or the Parish Center.

SNOW CLOSINGS E-MAIL ALERT

Since many parents work and do not have access to a radio or television during the day, we suggest that you sign up with either WBAL or Schools Out for an e-mail alert on Baltimore County school closings.

Here's how to sign up for Snow Closing Alerts:

For Schools Out go to http://www.schoolsout.com

Click on "Services" from the menu across the top

Scroll down and select “School’s Out Basic” which is a FREE e-mail alert service.
Step 1- “Choose the school you want to receive e-mail notices from”-- Choose Maryland, then choose BALTIMORE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Step 2
- Enter your e-mail address

Hit “Subscribe Me” button at the bottom and you will be signed up

For WBAL go to  http://www.thewbalchannel.com/closings/index.html, scroll to the bottom and follow the directions for e-mail alerts from WBAL also using Baltimore County Public Schools as the system for the alert.

CED INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

If school closes early due to inclement weather (parents must listen for radio/TV announcements that Baltimore County Public Schools are closing early), CED will close as follows (late fee of $1.00 per minute will apply):

  • If school closes 3 hours early (at 11:45), CED will close at 1:30.
  • If school closes 2 hours early (at 12:45), CED will close at 2:30.
  • If school closes 1 hour early (at 1:45), CED will close at 3:30.
School Absences
Absences: If your child is going to be absent or late for school, a parent must phone in by 8:10 a.m. each day of the absence with the reason for the absence. Call 410-464-4100, select the option for the main office (#5) and select the option to leave a message on the absentee line.(#1). Any absence not reported is considered unexcused.

Homework Pick-Up for Absentees
Homework for absentees will not be available for pick-up until 2:45 p.m. Please do not request to pick up books, papers, and work earlier than 2:45 p.m. All work will be placed on the shelf outside the office.
Please Note: Entry Policy for Late Students

Students are considered late if they are not in their homeroom by the 8:05
a.m. bell. If your child enters the building at the bell, he/she is late and will be required to sign in at the school office. If you are a parent of a younger child, you may accompany him/her into the building and sign in on the late sheet. Since attendance will be tracked electronically this year, it is imperative that each child sign in so that all attendance is accurate. Children arriving late who do not sign in will be marked absent for that day. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO SIGN THE LATE SHEET, please review this with your child.
Morning Drop Off Reminders

During the morning drop off please remember to follow these rules:

You may not drop off or pick up your children on Amberly Way for any reason. This has become a problem with some parents and poses a safety risk.

You may not stop and park your car. Please pull up, let your children get out, and continue on your way. If you walk your child in, please park your car in the second lot beyond the numbered faculty spaces.

You may not pass other cars in the car line. Please wait patiently for the car in front of you to pull out.

Thank you for being courteous to others and thank you for your cooperation

  Health News!

The absentee rate due to illness is quite low at this time and we can only hope it remains that way!

The STOMACH VIRUS is the most frequently reported illness recently, along with occasional fevers, most often with upper respiratory symptoms.

There have been just a few reports of STREP THROAT over the past couple of weeks and a couple had the Rapid Strep Throat Culture that was NEGATIVE but the culture sent out to the lab was POSITIVE. If you are taking your child for a Throat Culture and the Rapid test is negative, it is important to ask the health care provider if a culture is also being sent to the lab.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month so it is a great time to focus on keeping your mouth healthy and making sure you are keeping up with regular dental check-ups. The slogan for this year is: "ROCK YOUR SMILE". Tooth decay can be blamed on sugary soft drinks, acids in foods and beverages, which can erode or dissolve the enamel of the teeth, as well as poor oral hygiene. Form more information go to: www.ada.org.

I am available to answer any questions you may have or to discuss any special needs or concerns in regards to your child. Please remember that I cannot administer any medication at school if you have not had the Authorization for Administering Medication Form filled out and sent in. You can access the health forms by going to my webpage. You may call me, or leave a message on my voice mail 410-464-4113 if I am not in, or send an e-mail to the School Nurse.

Cathedral Music Series 2011-2012
http://www.cathedralofmary.org

April 1– 5:00 PM- Daniel J. Sansone, Organist

In observance of the beginning of Holy Week, the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Mr. Daniel J. Sansone, will perform an organ recital featuring Le Chemin de la Croix (The Stations of the Cross) by Marcel Dupré. The work’s movements offer musical reflections on the various Stations, depicting Christ’s Passion. Narrative readings will precede each of the fourteen movements. The regal acoustics of the Cathedral offer the perfect setting for this great work. This program is free and open to the public however, a free-will offering will be received.

Meal Packaging Event

CMOQ's service committee is sponsoring its second annual Meal Packaging program in conjunction with Catholic Relief Services on Sunday, February 12 from 10:30-12:30 in the school cafeteria. Our parish family will package 10,000 meals for the hungry overseas. Last year, our meals were sent to Haiti, and this year, they may be sent to the African nation, Burkina, which is classified as both a least developed country and a low-income, food deficit country. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need to raise $5000.00 for the grain, vegetables and vitamin supplements we will package and ship. We are seeking sponsorship for the event and suggest a $1000.00 individual sponsorship. Alternatively, individuals and families are welcome to join with others to create a sponsorship. Two contributors at $500? Four contributors at $250? All combinations are welcome. We are also seeking approximately 100 volunteers (parents and children) to help with the following activities: (1) help pack 10,000 meals (2) general room set up before the event, (3) unload the truck before the event and lift 50 lb bags of ingredients throughout the event, (4) load packed boxes of meals back onto the truck, (5) clean up after the event. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Donna McCann at donna.mccann@verizon.net and include in the email how you would like to help and the total number of adults and children in your family who will be participating. Many thanks to all  for your support.
