Dear Parents,
Welcome to this new school year which is a time to celebrate Catholic education for 50 years on Charles Street and 140 years established as the School of the Cathedral. The school will celebrate these milestones with a Mass at 5 p.m. followed by a Bull Roast on Saturday, October 9th. We will have other events planned for the students during the week of October 4-8.
Each year brings new excitement, challenges, and changes. It is a time of great hope and new routines for the entire school community. Parents, students, and teachers share the hope that this year will bring excitement to learning as well as building a strong faith community, openness to one another, positive affirming, and a deeper trust. Realization of this hope requires open communication, listening, trust, involvement, and a spirit of cooperation. As Catholic educators we hold a sacred trust to present both the Gospel message and an excellent education to your child. We accomplish this in partnership with one another.
Our school building is polished, cleaned, and ready to go. Our theme for the school year is: “Celebrate— Hope is our Future of 50 years and 140 years.” We are excited that every classroom has a SmartBoard and new computers for the faculty. Special thanks to our Cathedral Ball for providing the funds that continue to enhance our school for the 21st century. Our children benefit from the hard work of our parent volunteers and committees. Please consider being a volunteer this year on one of the numerous events.
Our Back-to-School Nights are scheduled for three nights: September 7th for grades 5-8 parents, September 8th for grades 2-4 parents, and September 14th for MWP and Grade 1 parents. We begin all of our meetings in the Parish Center at 7 p.m. There will be only one STAND meeting which will be held on Thursday, September 23rd at 7 p.m. in the Parish Center. All volunteers must be STAND approved by the Archdiocese before working with children in school, coaching, field trips, classroom volunteers, and parties. We are audited each year and must comply with references, background checks, and applications.
Our Opening Day Coffee is tomorrow from 8 until 11 a.m. in the Parish Center. Please park your car in the upper parking lot facing out when you drop off your children and come enjoy the social time together.
Our Opening School Liturgy is on Thursday, September 9th at 1:30 p.m. in the Cathedral. We have our 50th year on Charles Street to celebrate as the School of the Cathedral and ask for God’s blessing on the year. Parents are invited to join us in church.
Our Chess Club will begin on September 15th and will be from 2:45 p.m. until 4 p.m. in the Library. The registration form is in this bulletin. Chess Club is for all students in grades K-8 and develops skills for all levels.
In the words of our foundress, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger, 140 years ago, “Let us never forget the love of Jesus for children, whom He took upon his lap, caressed, and blessed. Whoever receives one of these little ones in my name receives me.”
Blessings on this new school year!

Cathedral Ball
History
We are researching the history of the
Cathedral Ball as part of the School's celebration of 50 years at
Charles Street. Our list of Ball chairs and dates is very complete
back to 1985, and then we have lots of gaps. Previous Ball volunteers
(or their children) are invited to send a note about "their" ball— if
you have information on ball themes, dates, locations, decorations,
super auction items, ticket prices, great volunteers and chairs, and
funny Ball stories— we would love to know about it!
We are particularly interested in
photographs from previous balls. Please send us copies or scans only.
No original materials can be returned.
If you have Ball history to share,
please contact Fran Gunther Minges at
baltominges@hotmail.com
or 15 West Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21210-2603. Thank you!

was held
Saturday,
April 24, 2010
The 16th Annual
Cardinal CupUnder
sunny and clear skies, the Cathedral School and Parish community
came out in great numbers in support of the 5K and 1 mile Fun Walk
to benefit Mother Seton Academy. Over 300 participants including
students, faculty and families from both schools came out to enjoy
a beautiful morning. There was much cheering and a great sense of
accomplishment as each runner crossed the finish line. We all
enjoyed a bountiful breakfast while hoping to win a raffle prize!
During the awards ceremony, we recognized the following runners
who placed in their categories. A wonderful morning to share with
our MSA friends and a celebration of the 16 years of collaboration
and friendship between our two schools! We are so grateful to our
many volunteers, sponsors, runners and walkers who participated in

CED- Cathedral Extended Day Program
The CED program will begin on Tuesday,
September 7th. All children who attend must be registered. If your
child is new to CED. you will need to submit a MD Department of
Education health form which is available under the CED heading on the
school website.The
registration deadline was August 10th. Late applications were accepted
through August 31st. If you wish to be added to the waiting list,
please leave a message on the CED phone, 410-464-4092.
Drop-in Service will begin on Monday,
September 13th. A new
guideline will be followed this year:
24 HOUR NOTICE MUST BE GIVEN FOR ALL
DROP-INS via the office
or teacher, phone message, or e-mail. The primary consideration of our
program is the safety of each child. Last year children arrived
without notification, or decided to come if a parent was late at
carpool time. In order to provide this service to many Cathedral
families, we must adhere to this 24 hour notice policy so that we are
able to plan for adequate staffing.
Thank you for your cooperation with
the CED rules.
Reminder: Parents, after 4:45 p.m.,
please pick up children at the Amberly Way door. If you have any
questions, please contact Charlotte Archer 410-464-4092

| SNOW and INCLEMENT
WEATHER POLICY
Please refer
to the Students/ Parents Handbook & Directory.
All official announcements regarding school closings, late openings, early
closings, or emergencies are made in WJZ-TV as well as other local
television stations and radio stations. The School of the Cathedral follows the same procedure as the Baltimore County Public Schools for early dismissal or closing. The
only exception is for late opening.
If Baltimore County opens 1 hour or 2 hours late,
Cathedral will open 1 hour late at 8:55 a.m.
Students may begin to arrive at 8:30 a.m. if necessary. In the event
that, after Baltimore County announces a 2-hour late opening, it then
announces it is closing, all students already at school must be picked up no
later than 10:00 a.m. When Baltimore County announces an early closing, Cathedral will close
accordingly:
1 hour early means that Cathedral will close at 1:45 p.m.
2 hours early means that Cathedral will close at 12:45 p.m.
3 hours early means that Cathedral will close at 11:45 a.m.
Parents should arrive to pick up their children as promptly as possible. The
children will remain in the school lobby or gym under adult supervision
until they are picked up. If there is a concern about road conditions, a
child may leave for the day after the parent reports to the School Office.
At all times it is the parents' decision to send children to school in
adverse weather conditions. Every effort will be made to communicate as
thoroughly as possible with parents regarding early closing. When feasible,
a flier indicating that school may close early due to expected adverse
weather conditions will be distributed to parents at morning drop-off. A
group e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided to the school
also announcing any early closings. Please do not call the School Office or the Parish Center.
SNOW
CLOSINGS E-MAIL ALERT
Since many parents work and do not have access to a
radio or television during the day, we suggest that you sign up with either
WBAL or Schools Out for an e-mail alert on Baltimore County school closings.
Here's how to sign up for Snow Closing Alerts:
For Schools Out go to
http://www.schoolsout.com
Click on "Services" from the menu across the top
Scroll down and select “School’s Out Basic”
which is a FREE e-mail alert service.
Step 1- “Choose the school you want to receive
e-mail notices from”-- Choose Maryland, then choose BALTIMORE COUNTY
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Step 2- Enter your e-mail address
Hit “Subscribe Me” button at the bottom and
you will be signed up
For WBAL go to http://www.thewbalchannel.com/closings/index.html,
scroll to the bottom and follow the directions for e-mail alerts from WBAL
also using Baltimore County Public Schools as the system for the alert.
CED INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
If school closes early due to inclement weather (parents must
listen for radio/TV announcements that Baltimore County Public Schools are
closing early), CED will close as follows (late fee of $1.00 per minute
will apply):
- If school closes 3
hours early (at 11:45), CED will close at 1:30.
- If school closes 2
hours early (at 12:45), CED will close at 2:30.
- If school closes 1
hour early (at 1:45), CED will close at 3:30.

School Absences
Absences: If your child is going to be absent or late for school, a parent
must phone in by 8:10 a.m. each day of the absence with the reason for the
absence. Call 410-464-4100, select the option for the main office (#5) and
select the option to leave a message on the absentee line.(#1). Any absence
not reported is considered unexcused.
Homework Pick-Up for Absentees
Homework for absentees will not be available for pick-up until 2:45 p.m.
Please do not request to pick up books, papers, and work earlier than 2:45
p.m. All work will be placed on the shelf outside the office.
|
Please Note: Entry Policy for Late
Students
Students are considered late if they are not in their homeroom by
the 8:05
a.m. bell. If your child enters the building at the bell, he/she is late
and will be required to sign in at the school office. If you are a parent
of a younger child, you may accompany him/her into the building and sign
in on the late sheet. Since attendance will be tracked electronically this
year, it is imperative that each child sign in so that all attendance is
accurate. Children arriving late who do not sign in will be marked absent
for that day. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO SIGN THE LATE
SHEET, please
review this with your child. |
Morning Drop Off Reminders
During the morning drop off please remember to follow these rules:
• You may not drop off or pick up your children on Amberly Way for
any
reason. This has become a problem with some parents and poses a safety
risk.
• You may not stop and park your car. Please pull up, let your
children get
out, and continue on your way. If you walk your child in, please park your
car in the second lot beyond the numbered faculty spaces.
• You may not pass other cars in the car line. Please wait
patiently for the
car in front of you to pull out.
Thank you for being courteous to others and thank you for your cooperation |

• Sixth Grade Students: All students entering the sixth grade are required to submit a new Health Inventory & Immunization record. Forms were sent home in the Spring, and were due by August 15, 2010.
• Health Forms: Forms are available at www.mdschoolhealthservices.org. The forms are listed on the right hand side and the forms available are the Medication Form, Record of Physical Exam Form with Part I for parents/guardians and Part II for your physician/nurse practitioner, and the Immunization Form. They are also available on my website, on the left hand side.
• Parents of students who are on medications at school, please remember that a new authorization form is required each year. Both you and the physician must fill out your respective parts and sign. Please have it returned by the beginning of school or before. Emergency Plans must also be updated each year.
• Any medication given at school— even Tylenol, ibuprofen, creams, or ointments— must be accompanied by written authorization from the physician and parents/guardians. Please do not send medications with the students unless absolutely necessary and then be sure that I am notified. Medications may be left in the office for me, if labeled and I am notified that they are there. All medications must be in the original container.

Please indicate on the cards which parent should be called first if a student needs to be sent home and please be sure that the emergency contacts are people who will be available and in town. If your child wears glasses or contact lenses, be sure to indicate this under the medical condition section and specify when the glasses should be worn.
