Dear Parents,

Last Sunday’s readings were on the “Fig Tree.” Our faith grows strong when we pray, learn about our faith, reflect on the Sacraments, participate in the life of our school and parish community, and reach out to help those in need. This is how we “cultivate” and ground our faith.

After last week’s announcement of the closing of several Catholic Schools, we are doing what we can to help parents at this time. I ask you to continue to pray for these children, families, and teachers. I also ask that you let us know if your child is not returning. We have limited openings in many grades but also want to assist parents who want a Catholic education for their child.

With Spring around the corner, it can be hard to keep children focused on learning. After-school activities may increase but schoolwork needs to remain a priority. This trimester’s work is challenging and requires more study time.

Grade 8 students will have their graduation portraits taken on Friday, March 12th. The dress code for the portraits was detailed in a letter sent home. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Moran 410-464-4107.

On Wednesday, March 17th, we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at school with “the wearing of the green!” This is a tag day and students contribute 25 cents for the poor in order to come to school out of uniform. Jeans or sweatpants and tennis shoes are to be worn with the green. Remember, we want to see the green!

At present, we are waiting for the salary scales from the Archdiocese to work on the budget for next year. The Finance Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, March 23rd to work on the 2010-2011 budget for approval at the April 13th School Board meeting. Tuition rates will be set and a letter will be sent home to all families.

Our Spring performance of “Annie” is generating much excitement around school! Mark your calendar for March 19th, 20th, or the matinee performance on Sunday, March 21st at 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and are $5 per person.

Gratefully,

Middle School Soup & Bread Fridays—Important Notice
The middle school teachers are very grateful to the parents who have helped with the Soup & Bread Lenten lunches.

The simple lunches and the reflection time have been a very worthwhile experience thus far. However, we must ask that all the parents who are donating soup on Fridays be aware that there are students and at least one teacher who are allergic to seafood--therefore, NONE of the soups should contain any seafood-related substance. This is extremely important. Soups can be tomato (with or without rice), meatless vegetable, potato, cheese & broccoli, or cream of broccoli. For those who are donating bread, please note that rolls are much easier to deal with. Uncut Italian bread consumes time and creates an unwanted mess. As always your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
Doodle for Google Contest

If your child is interested in the Doodle for Google contest, please email Mrs. Daley, pdaley@cmoq.org to give your permission for participation. Packets will start going home on Thursday, March 11. Doodle & supporting statement will be due to Mrs. Daley on Monday, March 22. No late entries will be accepted.

Late Arrivals

Parents, please be aware of the “Late Arrival” policy stated on page 13 of our Parent-Student Handbook: “Students are to be in homeroom before 8:05 a.m. Students arriving late to school ten (10) or more times per trimester will be required to serve an after-school detention.” Students must be in their homerooms before Prayer and Announcements, which begin promptly at 8:05. Please make every effort to have your children here on time. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

2010 DISCO BALL
Saturday, April 24, 2010

Co-Chairs for Cathedral Ball 2010:
Tina & Rocco Bognet and Alexa & Pete Gilmore

For ticket information, corporate sponsorship, advertising, or donating to the auction, please visit the Cathedral Ball page

Reserve the date on your calendar now for “The Disco Ball” Saturday, April 24, 2010 to be held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 3800 North Charles Street, on the corner of North Charles and 39th Streets.

DID YOU KNOW? Past ball proceeds have paid for Smartboards, Playground, Gym Floor, Computer Lab, and many other items. This year's Ball proceeds are slated to pay for new desktops for all teachers, Smartboards for all MWP classrooms, Tuition Assistance for current Cathedral families, and other technology upgrades.

ASK THE DISCO DIVA
With the Ball just around the corner, our own Disco Diva has been receiving a lot of questions from new families unfamiliar with the Ball activities. So, she thought she would open up the chat lines to answer your questions.

Dear Disco Diva,
Q: I was in the local market the other day and ran into a couple of Cathedral Moms. They were very excitedly discussing the upcoming camp auction. I was too embarrassed to admit I had no idea what they were talking about.

Signed, Stephanie Mangano of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

A: Dear Stephanie,
I can easily clue you in. The Ball traditionally holds both a silent and a live auction the night of the Ball. But over the years, so many fabulous local camps have donated camp time that the camps were separated from the main auction list. By moving the camp auction to March, parents are able to bid on and make camp plans before the camps become full. The camp auction list will come home with the kids on March 10th and you will have until March 18th to bid on a camp (or 2 or 3…). All the details for placing a bid will come home with the camp list.

Q: My dear mother-in-law has a beach house at Rockaway Beach that she has offered to donate for a week to the silent auction. How long do I have to donate this item to the auction?

Signed, Pauline, Class of 1978

A: Dear Pauline,
This question is easy to “piece together.” It’s best to turn in auction items as soon as you can, especially if you would like to make print in the auction catalog. (Deadline is March 19th!) The catalog will go to print in early April. Donations will still be accepted up until the Ball date, April 24th, but tell your mother-in-law if she would like to have it in the auction booklet, please hurry!

CAMP AUCTION BEGINS TODAY!
Camp Auction begins today and runs through end of day Thursday March 18th. A description of all camps, as well as bidding instructions, was sent home today. Please keep in mind that all money goes directly to your school, and you still get the same great camp experience!! Please contact Libby Rahl at lrahl@comcast.net or 410-825-0843 with any questions. GOOD LUCK!!

BAND

If you are interested in joining the band, please contact our Band Director by phone or e-mail Emily (Case) Liddick,
SNOW and INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Please refer to the Students/ Parents Handbook & Directory.

All official announcements regarding school closings, late openings, early closings, or emergencies are made in WJZ-TV as well as other local television stations and radio stations. The School of the Cathedral follows the same procedure as the Baltimore County Public Schools for early dismissal or closing. The only exception is for late opening.

If Baltimore County opens 1 hour or 2 hours late, Cathedral will open 1 hour late at 8:55 a.m.

Students may begin to arrive at 8:30 a.m. if necessary. In the event that, after Baltimore County announces a 2-hour late opening, it then announces it is closing, all students already at school must be picked up no later than 10:00 a.m. When Baltimore County announces an early closing, Cathedral will close accordingly:

1 hour early means that Cathedral will close at 1:45 p.m.
2 hours early means that Cathedral will close at 12:45 p.m.
3 hours early means that Cathedral will close at 11:45 a.m.

Parents should arrive to pick up their children as promptly as possible. The children will remain in the school lobby or gym under adult supervision until they are picked up. If there is a concern about road conditions, a child may leave for the day after the parent reports to the School Office. At all times it is the parents' decision to send children to school in adverse weather conditions. Every effort will be made to communicate as thoroughly as possible with parents regarding early closing. When feasible, a flier indicating that school may close early due to expected adverse weather conditions will be distributed to parents at morning drop-off. A group e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided to the school also announcing any early closings. Please do not call the School Office or the Parish Center.

SNOW CLOSINGS E-MAIL ALERT

Here's how to sign up for Snow Closing Alerts:

For Schools Out go to http://www.schoolsout.com

Click on "Services" from the menu across the top

Scroll down and select “School’s Out Basic” which is a FREE e-mail alert service.
Step 1- “Choose the school you want to receive e-mail notices from”-- Choose Maryland, then choose BALTIMORE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Step 2
- Enter your e-mail address

Hit “Subscribe Me” button at the bottom and you will be signed up

For WBAL go to  http://www.thewbalchannel.com/closings/index.html, scroll to the bottom and follow the directions for e-mail alerts from WBAL also using Baltimore County Public Schools as the system for the alert.

CED SNOW POLICY

If early closing is announced by Baltimore County Public Schools, CED will close at 4:00 p.m. (Late fee of $1.00 per minute will apply)

School Absences
Absences: If your child is going to be absent or late for school, a parent must phone in by 8:10 a.m. each day of the absence with the reason for the absence. Call 410-464-4100, select the option for the main office (#5) and select the option to leave a message on the absentee line.(#1). Any absence not reported is considered unexcused.

Homework Pick-Up for Absentees
Homework for absentees will not be available for pick-up until 2:45 p.m. Please do not request to pick up books, papers, and work earlier than 2:45 p.m. All work will be placed on the shelf outside the office.
Please Note: Entry Policy for Late Students

Students are considered late if they are not in their homeroom by the 8:05
a.m. bell. If your child enters the building at the bell, he/she is late and will be required to sign in at the school office. If you are a parent of a younger child, you may accompany him/her into the building and sign in on the late sheet. Since attendance will be tracked electronically this year, it is imperative that each child sign in so that all attendance is accurate. Children arriving late who do not sign in will be marked absent for that day. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO SIGN THE LATE SHEET, please review this with your child.
Morning Drop Off Reminders

During the morning drop off please remember to follow these rules:

You may not drop off or pick up your children on Amberly Way for any reason. This has become a problem with some parents and poses a safety risk.

You may not stop and park your car. Please pull up, let your children get out, and continue on your way. If you walk your child in, please park your car in the second lot beyond the numbered faculty spaces.

You may not pass other cars in the car line. Please wait patiently for the car in front of you to pull out.

Thank you for being courteous to others and thank you for your cooperation

  Health News!
Thankfully the illness rate continues to be low! There is a small number with the Stomach Virus and also with sore throats, colds and coughs.

Head Lice checks have been done in 4th grade, much of 1st grade and will be done in 2A this week. Currently the situation is under control. Please refer to last week’s bulletin regarding how to screen for head lice and their eggs (nits), and continue to do routine checks at home.  If you are in question, please call me and I will be happy to check your child’s head. Also please check with me about treatment options, as there is an alternative to the head lice products that seems to be working. Please remember that head lice are parasites and need a human head to survive; they are only transmitted by contact with someone who has them or with their hat, clothing, comb or brush (thus NO SHARING OF THESE ITEMS). They DO NOT jump, fly or hop. This has nothing to do with being unclean, and please remind your children not to make fun of or call attention to those who have been treated for head lice.

Nutrition Tip: Think carefully before buying popcorn and soda at the movies— AMC and Regal theatres use coconut oil (which is 90% saturated fat) to pop their corn; Cinemark theatres uses non-hydrogenated canola oil for popping, which is a better choice. If you bought a medium popcorn and a medium soda at Regal Theatre it would total 1,610 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat (which is many days worth)! I am available to answer any questions you may have or to discuss any special needs or concerns in regards to your child. Please remember that I cannot administer any medication at school if you have not had the Authorization for Administering Medication Form filled out and sent in. You can click on the above link and download a copy of this form to give to your doctor. You may call me, or leave a message on my voice mail 410-464-4113 if I am not in, or send an e-mail to the School Nurse.
