Notes from the Principal's Desk: 8th grade accomplishments, exam schedule, and more

Thirteen days. Count them: only thirteen days until the end of the 2018-2019 school year! Our 8th grade students only have nine days until graduation! The time seems to have passed so quickly this year. As educators, we end the school year with mixed emotions. We are exhausted from putting forth our best effort all year, but we also recognize that thestudents, faculty, and staff may need a break in order to re-energize.

Next week we begin exams. The exam schedule is as follows:

3rd Grade*
Wednesday-ELA
Thursday- Math

4th Grade
Tuesday - ELA
Wednesday - Math
Thursday – Social Studies

5th Grade
Tuesday – ELA
Wednesday – Math
Thursday – Science, Social Studies

6th-8th Grade
Tuesday – ELA, Religion
Wednesday – Math, Modern Language
Thursday – Science, Social Studies

*Note that third grade will not begin their exams until Wednesday.

The following week we enter the last week for our 8th grade students.
  • On Tuesday, June 4th, the 8th grade students will have their graduation rehearsal at 12 pm at the Cathedral. Please make sure your son or daughter is present at school this day. This is a full day of school for 8th grade.
  • Wednesday, June 5th, the 8th grade has their awards assembly in the gym at 9 am. Parents are invited to attend the awards ceremony. Afterward, the soon-to-be graduates will have a student-only brunch. 8th grade students are dismissed for the day after the brunch at approximately 11:30 am.
  • Thursday, June 6th, the 8th grade travels to Hershey Park. The bus is scheduled to leave at 8 am and will return at 6 pm.
  • On Friday, June 7th, the 8th grade students graduate at 3:30 pm in the Cathedral. The graduation will be livestreamed. Students should assemble in the undercroft at 2:30 pm. 8th grade does not attend school that day.
We invite all parents to attend the K-7 awards assembly in the gym on Wednesday, June 12th.
  • Kindergarten through 3rd grade will have their awards assembly from 8 to 9 am in the gym.
  • Grades 4 through 7 will have their awards assembly from 9:30 to 10:45 am in thegym.
  • Wednesday the 12th is also a half day with dismissal at 11:45 AM. It is also the last day for CED.

We’d also like to invite everyone to attend the closing Mass on Thursday, June 13th at 8:15 AM. This is also the last day of school with dismissal at 11:45 AM. There is no CED.

Finally, I’d like to share that our 8th grade students received over $358,642 in high school scholarship offers over the next four years! The ability to receive recognition from high schools by receiving a scholarship or multiple scholarships in many cases is a true testament to the value of remaining at Cathedral through 8th grade. We are so proud of our 8th graders and the work they have done over the years!

I pray that everyone will have a great Memorial Day weekend and remind the students to use some of this extra time off to prepare for exams.

God Bless,
Michael Wright
