Notes from the Principal's Desk: February 19, 2019

This week, the school intended to hold an evacuation drill on Wednesday, February 20th. However, due to the likelihood of inclement weather, we will be moving the drill toFriday afternoon.

I am sure everyone is keeping an eye on the weather and the impact it will have on school tomorrow. The latest weather report includes snow during the morning and a mix of wintry precipitation during the afternoon. High 33F. Winds ESE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 100%. Snow and ice accumulating 5 to 8 inches. Not ideal conditions to say the least. To complicate matters, the snow is predicted to start around 7 AM. Please know we will make a notification about school delay or closing as soon as it is possible, but it may be wise to take a final look at the news or check your phone for an update before heading to school in the morning.

In two weeks, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. During Lent, our community will participate in Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that invites us to encounter the needs of the world with the hope of the Resurrection. CRS Rice Bowls have been distributed to the teachers and may have already been sent home with the students. We ask that the students put a portion of what they may earn doing chores around the house into the Rice Bowls.

We will reflect on how this encounter can be transformative. We will see how our Lenten prayers, fasting, and almsgiving can respond to Pope Francis’s invitation to Share theJourney by supporting those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities.

As we prepare for this holy season, it is especially important to come together as a family and reflect on the crosses of hunger, poverty, and war that our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes carry. In so doing, we pledge to stand alongside these members of our human family, supporting them as the Gospel calls us to do.

Please consider these suggestions in your family’s Lenten plan:

  • Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar daily to guide your prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
  • Read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey—and guide your Lenten almsgiving.
  • Prepare simple, meatless meals on the Fridays of Lent to eat in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.
  • Visit www.crsricebowl.org to watch videos of the people and communities you support through your Lenten gifts to CRS Rice Bowl.

We will collect your CRS Rice Bowls at the end of Lent, so stay tuned to learn more. Thank you for participating in CRS Rice Bowl with your family.

Finally, I have been asked by the School Board to give a “State of the School” address to the school community. In an effort to reach as many families as possible, this communication will be done in a video format and shared via Facebook. If you are not on Facebook, there will still be access to watch and comment on the video, and we will communicate that as the video is launched. We will accept feedback and questions for seventy-two hours after posting the video. After that time period, another communication will be sent to answer any questions asked about the video. Be on the lookout for the video in the coming weeks.

God Bless,
Michael Wright
