Notes from the Principal's Desk: Week of January 3, 2022

Welcome Back! 👋

We are so excited to see the students back after Christmas break! We hope that everyone had a relaxing holiday and had an opportunity to spend some time with their loved ones. Above I share the school’s COVID Dashboard displaying data from the Christmas holiday through this morning. This information gives a more accurate and transparent view of the number of close contacts and positive cases, given the current rise in Omicron COVID cases.

The safety of the students, faculty, and staff is of the utmost importance. Therefore, we remind parents that it is essential that parents and guardians remind their children to bring their masks to school and be diligent in hand-washing throughout the day.

Thank You CASPA

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I wish to share a heartfelt “Thank You!” to all who donated to the CASPA Christmas fund. The money collected was distributed to the faculty and staff just in time for Christmas. We are so grateful to have such a thoughtful and caring community.

Johns Hopkins School Culture 360 Survey

You may recall that our school partnered with Johns Hopkins University to use a school culture survey for the Archdiocese of Baltimore Catholic Schools. The survey is now open. The goal of the survey is to learn more about the way things are done around the school, the beliefs and behaviors of everyone involved at our school. Of course, what you think and say is very important as we want to provide you with an excellent education- but we need to learn from you!

The survey is anonymous, and no one will be able to identify you by your answers. Parents, teachers, middle school students, and school administrators are also taking the survey because it is critical to listen to everyone. The survey's primary purpose is to help our school celebrate and improve. The secondary goal is to provide long-term analysis to the field of education about trends in school culture, using the (de-identified) data for secondary research.

I ask that you take 15 minutes to complete the brief survey by clicking on this link: JHU SCMOQ Parent Survey  The survey will be open until January 31, 2022. Thank you for helping us improve the school for our community.

The survey will be open until January 31, 2022. Thank you for helping us improve the school for our community.

Snow Days

This year we have taken two snow days so far. The likelihood of inclement weather impacting the opening of school tomorrow means that we may have reached our limit of AoB scheduled snow days by tomorrow. If we need to close the school after tomorrow due to weather we will have to pivot to holding remote instruction on those days. Our leadership team is developing a plan for what these days will look like and we will share with the community our plan once it is complete.

Scantron Testing

The Scantron testing window opens next week beginning on January 10th and remains open until the week of January 24th. The intermediate grades and middle school is planning on conducting testing next week during exam review week. Review week is typically a lighter week for grades 3 through 8 and the testing and prep for exams aligns well with the curriculum which will help students perform their best on both assessments. The 2nd grade is planning on testing the week of January 18th.

Grade 3 through 8 Exams

Exams for students in grades three through eight are the week of January 18th. The act of taking exams and preparing students to take exams is one of the unique learning opportunities that sets Cathedral apart.
